Compare the World’s Military Power

13 08 2007

MissileI found this interesting site while browsing a while ago, and I thought I should spread the link around. With this site you can compare 39 of the most powerful armies in the world. But, you must bear in mind that nuclear weapons, past and current military experience, unit training and equipment quality are not taken into account. The facts and figures used in these comparisons is based only on disclosed public sources. It provides a unique analytical display of national military strength based on sources from all over the globe. It is based on statistics such as yearly military expenditure, weapon inventories, oil reserves and available manpower.

You get quite a few surprises here, for example finding that Turkey and India have more powerful armies than the UK.

Click here to go to the comparison site.

Canada is the shit bitch! we are a strong country not in numbers but strength. Canada is a country where many people live on farms outside of mainstream canada. Which is most of Canada.

Key flaw of GFP (global fire power or globalfirepower.com) is that it brushed aside technological aspect of the countries’ military components – which is obviously crucial in waging war or conquest; arrows can’t compete with muskets, so can an F5 compete against an F16. Numbers alone cannot rank military strength. :)

i think ranking them on military spending with a more significant weight would make a better ranking… then again, how do you factor out corruption. :D

no this is highly in correct in terms mean man power yes but only just. but over and over again it’s not how many troops you have it’s how well trained and advanced they are the UK as proven it’s odds 10-1 against large number and the UK has not lost a major war in over 500 years and turkey’s military is not an advanced army at all it use’s past weapons and India.
The UK use’s the latest technology along side with the U.S.A
the proven oil reserves for turkey is not great it use’s more oil than what it has reserves and the UK has more than double reserves of What it use’s daily and you will most likely be saying what does this have to do with military might it is the most important thing to do with with out oil your forces will be driven to a Holt it is the fuel of war it’s very self not soon but shortly if oil is thin around the world i a sure you it will emerge war’s in vast number just fighting over oil. Check out the site for more detail to compare UK and turkey and INDIA

Gaz: The UK hasn’t lost a major war in over 500 years??? Really? I though the American Revolution was a pretty important war. But I do agree that they should be ranked higher than they are. In any event, I’m glad the U.S. has allies such as Israel, Britain and South Korea.

Theres no way Egypt can be more powerful than South Africa,
So since south africa is not included, it makes these analysis not so accurate, and highly questionalble

that guy who speaks english

Is there anyone on this site who knows how to speak and type in English?
The guy who said the UK should be rated higher is correct. They have more advanced weapons.
The guy who compared Israel to other countries and concluded that the ratings are inaccurate must be Jewish. Sorry to tell you this, but Israel would not be anything without the help of the US. We make them. We break them. We will rate them as we wish.
The rating is not accurate because it does not take technology into consideration. If this were taken into consideration, most European countries would be rated higher. When comparing just the advances in tanks, only a handful of countries could compete. The Russians, in my opinion are overrated. they have been stagnant for years. Nuclear power should be an important factor.
As a side note, a person’s intelligence is easily judged by what they say and how they say it. Some food for thought Gas.

In order for South Africa to be at peace with its neighbours and the rest of the world we chose not to exercise our powers to our weaker neighbors soon after the fall of apartheid government. The only powers we have proven to over exercise are the powers to solve differences by way of negotiations. However, not exercising our power millitarly mustn’t be interpreted as being weak. After the second world war we were ranked number 10 in the world. Economicaly we are number one in Africa with Egypt being second and constituting less than 50% of what we have. In sport when one look at soccer we are the only country in Africa that can host the world cup without any assistant from our neighbours, there are only five countries in Europe that are capable of doing the same, while others cann’t even host Euro cup allone. There are so many things that one can mention so ranking Egypt ahead of South Africa millitarly is a joke.

9 09 2009
ascol

The guy, analysing South Africa and other African economy is acting on sentiment, South Africa has done little or nothing to help militray situations in Africa. We have got series of civil war in Angola, Liberia, Rwanda, sudan Somalia and many more, South Africa, as you may have it, have not played any significant role in peace keeping, Is on record that Nigeria Military have been in the forefront, far ahead of South Africa in Peace Keeping activities, which is a major character in the UN (United Nation) chatter.
A country’s military potential is determine by her military might when the need arises, the US intervene in world military challenges because of her millitary potential and Nigeria do the same in Africa.
In Nigeria, military economy is different from commodity economy, the two, are run by different budgets. the GDP of Nigeria has very insignificant effect on the military potential.

“UK has not lost a major war in over 500 years and turkey’s military is not an advanced army at all it use’s past weapons and India.”

UK was powerful once but now they are not. India has its own technology which can match other major countries. India prefer peace and not creating any troubles to others.

U.S.A. couldn’t afford to fight a real war if they wanted to. They’re so far in debt, it wouldn’t be funny how fast their economy would fall apart if they actully had to use their industry. Right now this war int he middle east is nothing more then trying to beat up the retarded kid in school. They might have some of the best Tech in the world, and the man-power to use it, but its nothing if you can’t actully fund their use without an economic collapse. Its already happening thanks to the U.S.A. and their are shockwaves around the world from it. I give it another 10 years unless they make serious economic changes, or aquisitions, before they’re ranked must lower on that page. That is, if they still manage to pull out with a nation. Many other non-bankrupt countries could use the land, population, and industry.

Pakistan’s surrender in 1971 war is the biggest surrender by any army in the world. 90000 paki soldiers surrendered then. If you are in such a huge number you should have fought instead of lying your guns. India broke your country into two.

In Kargil, Well pakis were very well positioned and sat on hights but could not even keep tiger hill, and you talk about losing balls. And why did you flee kargil. You always ran from the battlefield.

For your kind information on the night of 6th September 1965 India tried to raid Lahore .But thanks to PAK Army they had to retreat and were further pushed in back to river Beas in that war a Pakistani pilot made a world record by shooting down 14 Indian planes in one combat .The war ended after 14 days when India requested UN for a cease fire Pakistan had occupied a few hundred Kilometers of Indian territory which was later returned after negotiations.

29 04 2009
India

My frien Pakistan was defeated in 14 days with the Indian army not capturing lahore because there was no need for it pakistan had already given up.
Besides the paki army can not even defend its own land and has lost all wars it has ever fought in 60 years of Pakistans misrable existence. Indian army is the best but unfortunately we have mad politicions other wise Pakistan would not have been there there would had been Balochistan, NWFP , Sind and a small moth eaten Panjab as a small paki state.

20 05 2009
AllahIsGreat

I wouldn’t go that far PAKLover. Pakistan’s military has a way of sensationalizing their defeats and victories. While its true that India and Pakistan fought the 65 war to a standstill – Pakistan doesn’t acknowledges its defeats in 47-48 and 1971. I guess denial is a good form of boosting morale. Pakistan has a fearsome army, no doubt, but what we lack is resources. We cannot win a war against India with our limited resources, which came to forefront during the Kargill Blockade of Karachi Port by the Indian Navy where we was reduced to having 14 days of Oil inventories..In an all out war, India’s vastly superior economic clout, manpower and resources would have overwhelmed us. What we need is a better navy, ours is just tatters and more investment in resources in countries like Africa, where India and China have already gained a big foothold.

hey pak lover
India has never in history tried to raid any place……please check ur records …….also” The Indian army was in possession of 710 mile² (1,840 km²) of Pakistani territory and the Pakistan army held 210 mile² (545 km²) of Indian territory. The territory occupied by India was mainly in the fertile Sialkot, Lahore and Kashmir sectors,[17] while Pakistani land gains were primarily in deserts opposite Sindh and in Chumb, in the northern sector.[18]“- source wikipedia
so i dont think india needed to beg UN for ceasefire
But all that apart India is a peaceful country thats why u never hear insurgency from india’s side

To define a military power: -The Nbr of soldiers is not very important. We need to compare the quality of the equipment, quality of the vehicules, ships, aircrafts and also the quality of the training and also the military budget .. The quantity is the less important..

Example: Canada has the best and the hardest training of the world ( that’s a fact) … Also one of the best equipment and the more modern equipment on earth. Canada has also the best tank. the leopard 2a6 .. One of the best fighter-interceptor, the Cf-18..

That’s why Canada is the 6th military power ..

1-United-States: 2.7 Millions Soldiers
2-China: 3,9 Millions
3-Russia: 3.2 Millions
4-France: 351 130 Soldiers
5-Royaume-Uni:492 270 Soldiers
6-Canada: 110 750 Soldiers
7-Allemagne: 270 000 Soldiers

Proud to be Canadian ;) !..

Ok Guy’s. Listen…..When it comes to Military strength and being a …So called,
“World Power”. Alot of different thing’s come into play. I have been studying World Military’s my whole life. I am a 35 year old American that has grown up through several different war’s. Including the U.S’s humiliating defeat in Vietnam. And for the record…We didn’t lose that war to the Vietnamese. Yes, we did fight them in combat. But…They were a Pawn in the “COLD WAR” game. The Soviet Union backed them with supplies and satelite imagery, Money, Weapon’s, Training…Etc. I also recall being rushed to the basement of my school during AirRaid drill’s during The Cold War Crisis with Russia. Alot of people think that we won the “COLD WAR”. And I know…The U.S.S.R did collapse. But they collapsed under their own weight. The Ruble declined because of an outragous amount of spending on their defence budget. Including: Advanced War Technologies. Early Warning Missile Defense, Satelites, The Soviet Space Program, A Nuclear Arm’s Race with the U.S. And above all, A Ten year war with Afghanistan. (Sound Familiar) ?
Ok, Still listening? Good.
While the Russian’s were dealing with the fall of Communism. NATO decided to show an interest in the former Soviet States, Like Kosovo for example. NATO was formed to fight off the Soviet aggressor’s in Eastern Europe, But now with the collapse of the Communist’s. Alot of the people’s and Nation’s of the North Atlantic Treaty Orginization saw no use for the Alliance anymore. So…To protect their Very existance . Nato, The Alliance, and more importantly, The United States of America plunged itself into various Military Conflict’s throuout Europe. After several year’s in these conflict’s We started to see light at the end of the tunnel. Most Conflict’s were settled and the NATO alliance grew even larger. After the Fall of the “EVIL EMPIRE”. (aka: The Soviet Union). Most considered the U.S.A the World’s only standing “SUPER POWER”. And then came 9/11. Now…The subject we have all been talking about is: World Military Strngth. Who’s Number One. Well… By going by most Military anylist’s calculation’s and “Knowlege” on the matter. You have to take a look at everything in whole. All Nation’s Strength’s, Weakness, Finances, Money spent compared to Money earned, which includes Defense spending, Technological advances, Etc…Undoubtedly the U.S has the most advanced Miitary in the World. But…(There’s alway’s a But). You have to look at Readiness and Effectiveness of a Countries Military. 9/11 in my opinion, displayed Quite a number of Weakness’s in the U.S’s Readiness to fend off an agressor. For example: Look at what just a few organized criminal’s were capable of doing to our countries Infrastructure. Now what if…That had been a planned attack from a foreign State such as…Well, The Russian Federation, or China. Like I said. No one can doubt the strength of our Military based on technology and number’s. But what about Readiness and Effectiveness? We have been at War with Iraq and Afghanistan for nearly eight years now with no end in sight. This makes me question the True capabilities of our Military. And more importantly, The “Think Tank’s” in Washington. Did we not learn the lesson’s of our adversaries the Soviet’s. We are sinking just as much money as the Soviet Union did in these War’s as they did with there war with the Afghan’s. (Ironic isn’t it)? In the meantime, while our Troops a stuck sucking in “SandCakes” for breakfast, Our Good’0l friends, The Russian’s have reemerged as a World Power. Now one has to question the strength of the Russian Military. Well…I did question it, And I also have an answer. When the U.S.S.R collapsed, Where do you think the majority of there Nuclear Weapon’s went? Well…As of right now. : 5/14/2009
The Russian Federation posesses the largest stockpile of W.M.D’s in the World. That includes : Bio, Chemical, and of course my favorite, Nuclear. Now. What about Technology? Well…We all know that when it comes to Technology you need money. Well they have that too. As of right now, The Russian Federation is the second largest Oil producer in the World. And they are on the verge of Eclipsing Saudi Arabia’s number of barrel’s of oil produced daily. They have also laid claim to a number of region’s in the Arctic where there are Vast ammount’s of unclaimed oil. Russia “IS” the World’s Energy “SUPERPOWER”. So between Russia’s Energy and Military Supply revenues, Russia…Next to China, has had the second fastest growing economy in the World. Just in the past few years Russia has shown the World that they are ready to take the title of:”True SuperPower” again.
Under Vladmir Putin’s guidance, and now his successor, President Yuri Medvedev, Russia seems to be back with a vengeance. They have also signed treaties with China, Venezuala, Brazil and Iran amongst other’s, For joint Military cooperation. Including: Training, Technologic Advances, Weaponry, and Intelligent’s. One has to question the motives here. Recently, NATO has been expanding there border’s to right outside of Russia. Making the Kremlin very uneasy.(Understandibly). In response, Russia dismantled the U.S and NATO trained (and supplied), Country of Georgia. The War between the two neighboring Countries only lasted five day’s. Displaying the Readiness and Affectiveness of the Russian Armed Forces. They have also been working hard under the guidance of the New Premier in Russia, former president Vladmir Putin, To overhaul and upgrade the complete Russian Military, including all branches of the Armed Forces, AirForce, Navy, and also Nuclear Weopons Systems. They have a new Topol-m type intercontinental ballistic missile with the capacity to carry up to ten warheads. Also capable of penetrating “Any” missile defense system in the World. Also they have made significant advances in conventional warfare, along with a new class of Nuclear Submarine and a Naval fleet comprised of at least Seven Brand New, State of the art AirCraft Carrier’s. To my knowlege, construction of the New Carrier fleet is already underway. So…In my opinion. There is only Two Countries in the World as of right now that are even worthy of ….”Honorable Mention”. One: (The United States of America) on the decline. And Two: (The Russian Federation).

15 05 2009
Alexandre

You’re maybe right.. I’ll replace China for Russia for the second place on my list..

1-United-States: 2.7 Millions Soldiers
2-Russia: 3.2 Millions
3-China: 3,9 Millions
4-France: 351 130 Soldiers
5-Royaume-Uni:492 270 Soldiers
6-Canada: 110 750 Soldiers
7-Allemagne: 270 000 Soldiers

When it comes to battle, it is important to dissect it base on defensive or offensive capabilities. It’s one thing to defend your country from an attacker but a totally different one to be the one doing the offensive. Other than attacking your neighbor, at present the US is the only country in the world capable of force projection throughout the world with mass airlift capabilities and true blue water navy. No other country has the capability to transport and fight over oceans. China may have 2 million man army but they cannot do force projection and offensive operations overseas… currently they lack air mobility and naval transports not to mention capable supply chain infrastructure and integrated command communications. Russia and India faces the same problem and that is why they are slowly converting their navies from littoral warfare to true blue water navy… to do that you need 2 important types of equipment…. an aircraft carrier and supply ships but building a navy like that requires time and a lot of investment. It’s going to take decades to even develop a small capable blue water navy.

On a more tangible note, I agree with the quality vs quatity assesment. Remember Gulf War I? the T-60’s and T-72’s of the Iraqi army couldn’t even penetrate the armor of the M1 Abrams.. the kill ratio was like 15 to 1.

Same with air superiority… once you control the sky the battle is half won. When it comes to that, the US is by far the most capable. No other country comes even close. There is absolutely no fighter plane that can match the F-22 in the sky.

It is very hard to rank the military strengths since no country would willingly disclose everything that it has. I would think that US comes first, followed by Russia, China, UK/France (smaller armed forces, better technology, good navy), India (actively modernising the military with new guns, missiles, planes, ships, etc). Germany has good technology and as far as I know, their tanks are still very good. Israel has a small but well equipped military, which has defended itself very well. Brazil, Australia, Japan and South Africa have a good militaries too. I agree with Adrian, quality of the equipment and air superiority are very important. With all due respect, I have not seen any independent info that suggests that Canada is strong enough to be placed in the first 6.

I feel that someone did raise a very important point: How much loss can a country take? US and EU cannot take huge losses because the public would turn against the war, like what happened in Vietnam and what is happening now. Russia and China can, and probably the public will never ever even know about the losses. India: maybe, but I doubt whether the public would be quite happy.

Continuing about India and the Wars in the Indian subcontinent, apart from the patriotic versions that may be taught in the schools in both of the countires, from what I know, 1948 Indo-Pak war was a stalemate, though India had pushed back Pakistani troops from Srinagar, 1962 Indo-China war was a Chinese win (India would have lost more had the US and UK not intervened for their own reasons), 1965 Indo-Pak war was again a stalemate (I could never find any details about a PAF pilot shooting down 14 planes) and 1972 Indo-Pak war was an Indian win, and the Kargil episode would have been an Indian win if the proper war had taken place (apparently, US had to threaten Pakistan to restain them from using Nukes because their puppets were loosing the conventional war).

Regardless of military power, small scale guerrilla warfare can bring down anyone. Britian found that in the 13 Colonies and Afganistan, Nazi Germany in the occupied Soviet lands, US in Vietnam, USSR in Afganistan, India in Sri Lanka, France in Indo-China and Algeria.

Let us hope that no one will ever go to war. At the end of the day, economic power is far more important than military power. If you have the money, you can hire someone to do the dirty job, as the Kuwaitis are reported to have boasted during the first gulf war.

2 09 2009
Sammy

apparently, US had to threaten Pakistan to restain them from using Nukes because their puppets were loosing the conventional war).

I am referring to the militants who were used by Pakistan to do the job.. so “puppets” mean “puppets of Pakistan”

3 09 2009
neo

I think that India should spend more in its army expenditure and get latest weapons from the US instead of the Israeli or russian weapons. even shitty and failed states like pakistan can have better weapons than us .

15 09 2009
Sammy

Neo,

I feel that the Indian military is too closely linked to the Russian military to change vendors, at this moment. The fifth generation HAL-FGFA is being developed together, not to mention most of the hardware (eg. NAMICA, BRAHMOS) that the Indian military is currently using. Russian harware is quite affordable, in the current MRCA competition for 125 4.5 gen aircraft, the MIG-35 seems to be the cheapest… However, the Russians do know their position and tend to “re-negotiate” signed defence deals (eg. Admiral Gorshkov deal), knowing well that the Indians will have to agree.

However, once the Indian military has successfully developed the Surya missile, the HAL-LCA, the HAL-MCA, the Vikrant Class Carriers and the Kalkotta class destroyers, then it can be in a better position to change vendors.

15 09 2009
Sammy

If I may also write so, it would be better for any country to be in a position to develop it’s own hardware. That way, they are not dependent on the whims and fancies of the vendors.
